I want one of these in real life and not just as a jump.
On the first bipartisan act of the new legislature, congress-members from Morena and Accion Nacional (MRN and PAN as I call them here) joined together to request that rapists and child molesters be chemically castrated. PAN being the conservative party, and Morena being the “liberals.”
But the President went out and said it was a misguided approach to curving the rising rate of rape and hate crimes against women (specially young and transgender women) in Mexico. Which I... I agree with him? Doesn’t happen often I must say...
Other that:
1. Mexico’s third largest city and biggest pain in the ass is holding a special election (I bet a certain norteño oppo is quite annoyed by the political adverts in Monterrey)
2. Puebla got a new governor in the form of former first lady of Puebla Martha Erika after a highly contested election. the opposition party is saying that there was electoral fraud involved to make sure she won. Governor Erika will be Puebla’s first female governor.
3. A special election in (I wanna say Chiapas?) couldn’t be carried out correctly
4. The Supreme Court called a new budgetary law unconstitutional since it would reduce any salaries within the Federal Government to under 63,000 dollars a year; which is what the President makes. Currently a Supreme Court judge could be expected to earn upwards of 350,000 dollars a year (not including end of year bonuses or any other benefits)
5. The congress passed a set of laws increasing the amount of crimes worthy of mandatory minimum sentencing and it included “corruption” within that definition.

I can only imagine that people with dual US/Mexico citizenship are going through. With the exception of Canada, the whole continent has become a Kafka-esque shitshow.

I support physical castration for rapists and child molesters.

Well, I have dual citizenship (MEX/ESP) and both countries are sort of fucking up.
I think the current government in Spain is only placeholding because a huge corruption investigation is about to take them down (it already took down the conservatives, which was why Rajoy was removed from office a few months ago)

As do I

I understand why someone would support it, but I just can’t bring myself to do so. I throw it under the same mantel as the death penalty.

I see stuff about other countries’ politics but I can’t really bring myself to pay attention because I’m already completely burnt out by American politics.

Just reading shit here burns me too but I guess I’m masochistic about news and politics.

I don’t know. On one hand, I think it’s too strong a punishment if irreversible. And I think it’s just another aspect of excessively punitive American culture where oftentimes there is no longer such a thing as a second chance or concept of sufficient time served in repaying a debt to society.
On the other hand, rape and child molestation do irreparably damage, sometimes destroy lives, and perhaps destroying lives like that means we’re gonna do our best to try and stop you.
It is a tough question.

Honestly, things in the US are so blatantly criminal at EVERY level all the way down to the fucking cities , I don’t think I could look at Spain without an overwhelming urge to just kill myself.
I mean seriously, 10 years ago the feds executed a raid connected to corruption around here. People arrested included the vice president of a major health system, four judges, the COUNTY SHERIFF, and more than a dozen attorneys. And that’s just scratching the surface.
And it’s done absolutely nothing to actually address the corruption. They collected a whole $5.1M in restitution and not a single one of the ones from that batch is still in prison - most of them served less than a year. Meanwhile, this year ALONE we have at least SIX ongoing corruption probes known to the public involving tens of millions of dollars.

I mean, a day after Obrador took office the anti-corruption agency director committed “suicide”and corruption costs us 150 billion dollars of economic activity every year. So shit is kinda shady in North America at the moment.

I’d support a death penalty for rapists amd child molesters if carried out by the community rather than the state.

Not a tough question if you know someone who was raped or molested.
American culture is far from punitive when it comes to sexual violence.

I can’t support it because I think that it’s a cruel and unusual punishment, in the case of the death penalty it has been proven not to be a deterrent anyway. I know rape victims, and I even prevented a child molestation, but I still think that the cornerstone of any civil society lies in rejecting cruelty as a means to amend crime or any other wrong.
Eye for an Eye doesn’t work, which is why natural law includes the concept of Nemo iudex in sua causa.

Those are solid points. I think I’m in favor.

I don’t think there’s any way to prevent sexual predators from abusing people.
I don’t think either of us live in a civil society, so making provisions for rapists and child molesters is irrelevant to me.
I don’t believe in an eye for an eye either. Heart for an eye.
